Gallery 1885: ISOLATION PROTRAITS

Isolation Portraits by Chris Pig: 26 FEB - 15 MAR


"Isolation Portraits" is a project developed while in lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic that hit the planet in 2020. Isolation: time to think and rethink, time to reflect and to put things into perspective.


With the absence of most of the inputs we were used to, everything has a more personal and intimate feel.  Time to face our fears and visualise them in a different way. Time to express our more intimate thoughts. Our personal world, space and habits were turned upside down, social scales were upturned, and values changed. Lost feelings were found and solitude gave an insight into ourselves, our inner fears and strengths. We were suddenly forced to live differently and a lot of social fluff was taken away overnight leaving us with a clear view of our own reality.


“Each portrait tackles a different social or personal issue as well as expressing my personal opinion visually rather than in words”.


Chris Pig is an Italian photographer, based in London since the early 1990s.

It's one of our most popular events and open to everyone.

Stewards Needed - Help out & earn points

The Camera Club relies on stewards to volunteer to keep the club open and running 7 days a week and to enable members to access the building.

We're currently looking for a few new stewards who can commit to 2 to 3 shifts per month - either the same shifts each month, or filling in for shifts as and when available.  

Stewards receive 25 points per 4 hour shift (equivalent to £25 of studio, darkroom, edit suite hire, or membership renewal).

The Camera Club Stewards have an active WhatsApp chat for communicating about steward matters and asking questions, and will have a key to the Camera Club.  Induction will be given, with support as you get to grips with stewarding.

Gallery 1885: HORTUS MAXIMUS

In an era of ultra-processed food, the show entices us to expand our repertoire of edible plants and delight in the spectacular shapes grown by nature. 

Plants which deserve to be immortalised through a photographic process - before being eaten.
Faye is a photographer & photojournalist for the BBC, Ch4 & commissioned by the royal family, her portraiture is owned by the Royal Academy & the National Portrait Gallery. 

JAMES ELLIOTT CLOSING PARTY

To mark the success of JAMES ELLIOTT's incredible show - A Tale of Three Cities - we're holding a closing bash that will attract some industry stars and TCC members galore. So head down for some free drinks and food and bring whoever you like.

TCC AGM - SAT 24 @ 2pm

All members are welcome. This is the opportunity for members to hear about what is going on at the Club, contribute their ideas and get more involved.  We also discuss the previous years' performance both based on finances and engagement.

Constrained by just one person’s experiences, the exhibition “Fragments” is an “In-hibition” - unique and random fractions of a second, stolen from the time-space continuum and briefly frozen - each as a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity.

Image Art Exposed Group - Theme: Landscape: 16X9

The next IA Group meeting will be on Wednesday 27 September. The theme for September is a little different: Landscape 16x9.


The vast majority of pictures tend to stick to two formats: 10x8 or 6X4. Why? Maybe because 10X8 inches has always been one of the most popular paper sizes for prints and 6X4 is the format for 35mm film. Let’s try something different. 16X9 - the format for movies.


Does it have to be a landscape? Absolutely not. Cityscape, nightscape, fashion portrait, street, travel, whatever genre you like. It can be a brand-new picture you have shot this month or something from your archive. Any picture at all. It just has to be 16X9.


Now this could be a tricky project. Tricky, but lots of opportunities! Composition (Rule of thirds? Golden ratio? Negative space?), closeup, full-height, portrait?


Whether you are sharing pictures or not, come along to the group on Wednesday 27 September. It’s a great opportunity to meet up with lots of members. See old friends, make new friends. Chat about photography, share information and tips and just generally have a good evening. Oh, and there will always be good photographs to look at.

Gallery 1885: Stuart HullA Peculiar Moment in time

June is Pride Month in the UK, one of the biggest events in the LGBTQIA+ calendar so it is entirely fitting that the next exhibition at Gallery 1885 is “A Peculiar Moment in Time” by Stuart Hull.


Photographed entirely in colour, this collection of 28 portraits of past and current members of London's LGBTQIA+ community is part of a new and ongoing series of authentic, truthful and revealing pictures documenting the LGBTQIA+ community called "A Queer Portrait of Britain".


If you would like to see the diversity, vibrancy and tenderness of expression within the queer/LGBTQIA+ community of London, come along to the exhibition or the open view.

ImageArt June: All Work & No Play

The theme for the next ImageArt get-together is “All Work & No Play”. It could be a worker, a place of work or going to work. A banker, an actor a waitress, a bus conductor, a carpenter, an architect, a lawyer, a shop assistant – any kind of worker. Working, looking for work, going to work, coming home. 


It could be a formal portrait or a Linkedin headshot. It could even be a Christmas party or a celebration or the loss of a favourite colleague. Whatever picture it is, let it be real. Real workers doing real things. (Model shoots and actors’ headshots are not included!)


So, everybody, get to work!

The Graffiti Tunnel Location Shoot. We will meet at the corner of Waterloo Road and The Cut in front of The Old Vic Theatre at 10 am on 24th June and walk to the Graffiti Tunel to do some urban portraits with flash-gun, umbrella, and reflectors (whatever we have). 


We will model for each other. If possible wear a monochromatic T-shirt and jeans.


This is a free group open to everyone, simply turn up and join in, however, we don't wait around so if you're late make sure you have someone's number or are in the WhatsApp group.

A new group that uses bleeding-edge technology, from Photoshop, video, AI, Lidar, drones, 3D and many more technologies to create great photographic images. They also feed into our branding and training. Run by industry professionals it's an open-ended group that is mostly active on WhatsApp. This is not for the casual photographer but is an incredibly technical group. It will require you to be available for a day a month to organise the monthly comms and a bit of posting during the week when announcements happen.

Gallery 1885: Stuart Hull

A Peculiar Moment in time

04 June – 01 July

June is Pride Month in the UK, one of the biggest events in the LGBTQIA+ calendar so it is entirely fitting that the next exhibition at Gallery 1885 is “A Peculiar Moment in Time” by Stuart Hull.

Stuart is probably best known for his subtle black and white portraiture, but this project is something of a departure for him. Shot entirely in colour, “A Peculiar Moment in Time - LGBTQIA+ Portraits of London” is an ongoing series of dramatic pictures documenting the queer/LGBTQIA+ community. Authentic, truthful and revealing, the exhibition portrays a combination of what is presented on the outside and what is often hidden on the inside.

The exhibition is opening on 04 June with an Open view on Friday 09 June to which everybody is invited. 

It closes on 01 July which just happens to be Pride in London Day!

So, if you would like to see the diversity, vibrancy and tenderness of expression within the queer/LGBTQIA+ community of London, come along to the exhibition.

Avedon: Glamorous | Hamiltons Gallery
17 May – 11 August

If you have never seen the work of Richard Avedon, now is the time to catch up! Whilst Bailey, Donovan and Duffy were tearing up the rule book in the UK back in the Sixties, Richard Avedon was doing exactly the same across the Atlantic. The exhibition  “Avedon: Glamorous” at Hamiltons Gallery is a celebration of his work.


With iconic and rarely seen photographs that focus on glamour, the exhibition shows Avedon’s unique ability to make the most mundane subjects appealing and brings a sophisticated glamour to some of the 20th century’s most notable figures.

Seen Not Heard | Atlas Gallery

We’ve all seen a lot of pictures of children. Smiling, beaming, happy…
The Atlas Gallery have put together an exhibition that perhaps shows a different side of children by some of the most famous and celebrated photographers of the last 150 years.

Featuring some stunning work by Julia Margaret Cameron, Henri Cartier Bresson, Paul Strand, Robert Doisneau, Dorothea Lange, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Roger Mayne and Edward Steichen and others, “Seen Not Heard” is in aid of Save The Children Fund

Gallery 1885: Lost in Los Santos

Enzo Peccinotti: Lost in Los Santos

Enzo writes: This project was started during lockdown when I literally spent a week in Los Santos, Grand Theft Auto's virtual version of Los Angeles and the setting for their video game. It was a perfect means of escapism and killing time since the movie-like adventure you embark on as a career criminal takes weeks to finish. 

What was truly striking was how vast and detailed the setting is to make your drug running and bank robberies a more lifelike and immersive experience. This lead me down a different path, soon roaming the game as a photographer to see if I could render a set of prints that would look like something I'd produce in the real world had I travelled to California with a camera.

Dates: 1st May - 3rd June  - Open view 4th May 7.30pm

Introduction to studio lighting

This is an introductory course aimed and those who are completely new or mostly new to studio lighting. It’s a much slower-paced course where you’ll be allowed to ask questions, learn to understand basic lighting setups and know how to use all the studio lighting independently. 

This is ideal for anyone wanting to get up to speed quickly and prepare themselves for the more advanced courses or using the studio facilities independently. 

Next available dates: Wednesday 10th May - 7pm
Tickets are limited to 7 per class and cost just £12 for 2 hours. 
You must bring your own triggers.

Nick Gregan: Portrait Group

The Portrait Group will be meeting on 18th May at 7pm. There is no theme decided yet but you can sign up now and secure your place. There will be a professional model and lighting setups supplied. Aimed at intermediate to advanced photographers this is an ideal opportunity to explore studio lighting with an industry professional and create portfolio-quality shots.

Tickets are available from the website group page - limited to 6 and cost just £25 for 2 hours.

Nick Gregan: The Dance Photography Group

The Dance Photography Group will be meeting in late May for 2 hours. This is a dedicated dance photography group aimed at more advanced photographers wanting to boost their portfolios. it’s the ideal opportunity to explore lighting techniques with fast movement and an industry professional dancer. 

Next available date: TBC 

Tickets are limited to 6 and cost just £30 for 2 hours. 

The Studio Pod

The Studio Pod will be meeting on the 20th May at 10am - currently, all slots are taken but you can contact the front desk and be asked to be put on the 'reserve list' should someone pull out you'll be contacted.

If there is enough interest we may open up studio 2 to run parallel to this session. Email digital@thecameraclub.co.uk if you want to join a future session.

Online Event: Lightroom Masking - 16th May

Our next online session on Lightroom / Photoshop masking techniques will focus on all aspects of masking and how you can achieve the best results in both apps, but will also act as a general overview of the technique in any application.

You can submit your own images to be worked on live at the session by emailing a RAW format file to digital@thecameraclub.co.uk and it will be worked on during the session.

FREE TO ALL but photo submissions will be prioritised for club members. You can join via zoom or watch in the club on the TV.

ImageArt May: Once Upon a Time

The group is going from strength to strength. After last months packed attendance (now our most popular with over 35 attendees) with the theme of “Cities”, the group is meeting this month on Wednesday 31 May. The theme is “Once Upon a Time…”

Fictional, documentary, fantastical, happy or sad. Using a single picture or a series of pictures tell us a story. It could be shot in the studio, shot in the street, shot anywhere. 


The story of a man, a woman, a house, a street, a motor car… a doggie? It could be based on a song or a book or a movie or it could be a true story - a documentary. The choices are endless.

Tickets are unlimited and free. The only cost is your creativity.

TCC EXCLUSIVE: Alternative Process Printing Courses with Dr Peter Moseley

The Camera Club is honoured to present a series of exclusive workshops featuring Dr Peter Moseley, one of the UK's foremost experts in early contact-printing processes.


The Alternative Print Processes course, scheduled from June to July, delves into various printing techniques, including Cyanotype, Platinum/Palladium, Salt & Albumen, and Photogravure.



With only SIX tickets available per session, these workshops are expected to sell out rapidly. As the course is unlikely to be offered again in the near future, we encourage you to secure your tickets promptly to avoid disappointment.

Updates for this month at The Camera Club

More live studio sessions & training

Many members have requested we run more live studio sessions and so we've put together a whole heap of new sessions. Our live sessions are available for all skill levels. They're aimed at hellping our members to increase their skills, build up strong, vibrant portfolios whilst experiencing working with trained professionals in a comfortable environment.

Introduction to studio lighting

This is an introductory course aimed and those who are completely new or mostly new to studio lighting. Gallery 1885

MOON CHILD is a collective collaboration between David Fons Lathrop, Catarina Correia and photographer Dave Shrimpton.

Their exhibition Celestial Chaos is described as: A journey through the lens of Victorian Photography, this collective trio brings to you an experience of the esoteric, the strange, and the Ancient."

"Moon Child is the manifestation of the timeless journey of the soul. From birth in chaos, till the liberation of the shadow, and all the deaths and rebirths in between. 

The exhibition will run from the 2nd to 29th April with the open night on Thursday 5th April from 6pm. It will be a widely attended event so please be prepared for it to be busy.

Urban Pod - 22nd April

The Urban Pod is our regular group meet-up exploring street portraits, street photography, architecture and urban spaces.

 

The next event is on Sat 22nd April from 10 am - 2 pm

Meeting Point: Surrey Quays Overground station

Distance: around 4 miles


The tour will take us from the Greenland Dock to the Thames, with views over Canary Wharf and Tower Bridge to the West, along the Thames to Surrey Water and back towards Canada Water via the Albion Dock. Lots of history and an interesting mix of buildings, waterways and docks.

The Impossible Group

The Impossible Group is an exploration of the bleeding edge of photography, image-making and camera technology.

 

The Impossible Group will be meeting again on Wednesday, April 19th at 7pm. We will be discussing a series of image-making applications and AI generators from the stunning Midjourney v5 that we’ll be live demoing on photographs taken in the studios, along with other platforms such as Stable Diffusion, DALL-E 2 and the new offerings from Adobe’s Firefly, Camera Raw’s Super Resolution Increase and Photoshop Neural filters.


We’ll be showing our own creations and helping you to integrate these technologies into a workflow to create stunning images and also add an extra toolset to your photography skills. To join simply comment on any of our social posts with #jointccig and our bots will do the rest.

What we're looking at...

The Centre for British Photography is NOW OPEN. It's based in Jermyn Street just off Piccadilly in central London. Exhibitions at the Centre will be FREE and all profits from the gallery shop will go to fund the Centre and its grants programme. Read more here.
