“Son of a Beach and Other Stories”

Son of a Beach and Other Stories is a collection of images from Nicholas Andrews’ catalogue of personal and editorial work. 

Son of a Beach is a narrative of the male form in the context of the coast, reflecting his adolescence growing up in Dorset, close to some of the most beautiful beaches in the UK.

"Sunburnt necks, salty bleach blonde hair, ice cream, the sun’s residual heat in our bodies. Romanticising the connection of skin, sea & sand, to burgeoning teenage desire.
“These pictures are memories, or recollections, recounted in a different world but with historic context.
The manifestation of adolescent longings, Echoes of a fantasy life.
We lived close to the beach, always living for the Summer.
Sunburnt necks, salty bleach blonde hair, ice cream, the sun’s residual heat in our bodies.
It’s a familiar landscape for me throughout my life, a place of comfort and safety.
Romanticising the connection of skin, sea & sand, to burgeoning teenage desire.
As I got older and braver, with freedom to explore Men,
nude in the dunes, stolen glances, ever hopeful of attention.
Anticipation, adulation, connection, rejection
Always looking, looking, looking.
Fear that something so beautiful was not meant for me, fear of discovery,
fear of myself and who I really was.
The beach no longer so innocent and yet still magnificent.
So, I reinterpret my past for you, the observer, and bring it to the present.
Recalculate the near misses and reevaluate my own power.
To see with my own eyes and know that my angst was not in vain.
That’s the beauty of photography, the ability to see.
An interpretation of a world as you want it to be.”

Nicholas Andrews (b.1972) is a British Photographer from Poole, Dorset. After graduating with a MA Distinction in Fashion Photography for UAL, Nicholas became a published fashion, beauty and entertainment photographer working commercially with well renowned brands including COS, eBay, H&M, Tinder, Three and Ugg. He has also been published in The Rakish Gent, Jon Magazine and the Perfect Man

SUBMISSIONS NOW CLOSED

Twice every year at The Camera Club, we love to share the work of our members. To show the skill and imagination of our wide and diverse membership; to show beautiful, intriguing, challenging, puzzling and sometimes funny photographs.

The next members exhibition is the annual Members’ Summer Exhibition and it will be taking place this year from 01 July to 19 July.

Things changed at Gallery 1885 a year or so ago and since then the Members’ Exhibitions have gone sky high. We have received many, many submissions and the Open Views have been fantastic evenings. Great parties.

Things have changed again.

There is going to be a limit to the number of pictures we can receive. In the past couple of members’ exhibitions, the total number of submissions has been unlimited. This year it is limited to 60 pictures. 

The other change is that the Open view will be taking place in the second week of the exhibition: 11 July at 7pm, not the first week. Why? The first Thursday would be 04 July, the same day as the UK Election. What that means is because the winners will be announced a week later the voting system is going to change a little. Full details below.

What hasn’t changed is that there are still going to be prizes!

  • First prize 100 points
  • Second prize 75 points
  • Third prize 50 points

One point equals one pound and the points can be exchanged for studio, darkroom, digital suite time and your annual subscription (not workshops, though) So when you think about it, the first prize is a hundred quid!

The winners will be decided by their fellow members. As well as submitting prints, each submission should also include a digital image. All of the images will be displayed on The Camera Club Website and each member will be able to vote for their first, second and third favourite pictures. 

We really want to present as much work as possible from as many members as possible. There is no set theme, no limitations. Street, portrait, fashion, landscape, narrative, documentary - any genre you wish to share.

All of the submitted prints must fit our standard frame of 500mm by 400mm. If you have never provided prints before, have a look at our Gallery Hanging Guide for a few hints and tips. And if you have any other questions or need any more information, get in touch with Bill Hart-French at Gallery 1885 he is more than happy to help you in any way.

So, if you would like to submit some pictures and join in with the exhibition. This is what you need to do.


Step One | Digital Versions

We need a digital version of your pictures so we can display them on the website and the members can vote for them. Email the digital versions of your submitted images to submissions@thecameraclub.co.uk. Each JPG should be a minimum of 1500px on its longest edge and you should provide the following information in your email:

·       Your name
·       Your email

You can submit up to two images and they should be named in the following way:

YourName_ImageTitle.jpg

The deadline for submitting the digital images is midnight on Sunday 23 June. If images are received after this time, they will not be eligible for the vote. PLEASE NOTE: As soon as we have received 60 submissions, the door will be closed. So, if you would like to share your photography, please submit your images as early as possible.


Step Two | Printed Versions

Deliver the prints to The Camera Club. As mentioned, they should be 500mm by 400mm. If you wish to submit prints of a different size (smaller, not larger), we are happy to receive them, but you will have to supply your own frame.

Place a label on the back of each print with the following information:

·       Your name
·       The title of the image
·       Your email
·       The file name of the corresponding digital image (YourName_ImageTitle.jpg)

As well as putting a label on the back of the print, please put a label on the packaging as well. That way we can easily repack your pictures after the exhibition is over.

The deadline for delivering the prints to The Camera Club is 10pm on Friday 28 June.


Step Three | Voting!

The voting will open on Tuesday 25 June and will close at midnight on Wednesday 10 July. When the voting page is ready it will be announced via a special newsletter, on the website, on social media and on the club Whatsapp group (The Camera Club – Main). Each member may vote just once. 

You can vote for three pictures. First choice, second choice, third choice and the pictures will receive three points, two points and one point accordingly.

In the past, we have received a couple of comments about the voting. Some people wanted to see the pictures on the wall, in real life, before voting. They felt that they would be able to appreciate the photograph better that way. Pictures can often look different in real life. Better than digital versions online. So, because the voting deadline is in the second week of the exhibition this year, you will be able to see the pictures on the wall before voting. But voting, as before, will take place online.

The result will be announced on the evening of the Open View on Thursday 11 July. Oh, did we mention there will be booze and nibbles? A Summer Party? Absolutely!

Gallery 1885: ISOLATION PROTRAITS

Isolation Portraits by Chris Pig: 26 FEB - 15 MAR


"Isolation Portraits" is a project developed while in lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic that hit the planet in 2020. Isolation: time to think and rethink, time to reflect and to put things into perspective.


With the absence of most of the inputs we were used to, everything has a more personal and intimate feel.  Time to face our fears and visualise them in a different way. Time to express our more intimate thoughts. Our personal world, space and habits were turned upside down, social scales were upturned, and values changed. Lost feelings were found and solitude gave an insight into ourselves, our inner fears and strengths. We were suddenly forced to live differently and a lot of social fluff was taken away overnight leaving us with a clear view of our own reality.


“Each portrait tackles a different social or personal issue as well as expressing my personal opinion visually rather than in words”.


Chris Pig is an Italian photographer, based in London since the early 1990s.

Stewards Needed - Help out & earn points

The Camera Club relies on stewards to volunteer to keep the club open and running 7 days a week and to enable members to access the building.

We're currently looking for a few new stewards who can commit to 2 to 3 shifts per month - either the same shifts each month, or filling in for shifts as and when available.  

Stewards receive 25 points per 4 hour shift (equivalent to £25 of studio, darkroom, edit suite hire, or membership renewal).

The Camera Club Stewards have an active WhatsApp chat for communicating about steward matters and asking questions, and will have a key to the Camera Club.  Induction will be given, with support as you get to grips with stewarding.

Gallery 1885: HORTUS MAXIMUS

In an era of ultra-processed food, the show entices us to expand our repertoire of edible plants and delight in the spectacular shapes grown by nature. 

Plants which deserve to be immortalised through a photographic process - before being eaten.
Faye is a photographer & photojournalist for the BBC, Ch4 & commissioned by the royal family, her portraiture is owned by the Royal Academy & the National Portrait Gallery.

Meetup Groups

NEW GROUP: EXP

Monthly meet-up for those shooting with analogue film cameras and, ideally, producing prints in a darkroom. It will continue on the first Monday evening of each month, at 7 pm. Open to everyone.

Ian Greaves: I'm getting it up and running, but the programme will be determined by the attendees. Please help me get this new group off the ground, and share experiences and expertise. We will introduce ourselves, and tell the others how we go about things. See you all on the 2nd; (don't be late).

PhotograpHERS group

This ever-more popular group celebrates the work of female photographers throughout history. Each month we explore the work of two artists of interest.

Bleeding edge techniques in the world of image making and photography.

Bring your own images and ask questions on techniques.

Our monthly walkabout the streets of London. The tour will take us around the Swanscombe Peninsula and along the Thames through a mix of natural and industrial landscapes. Waterproof walking shoes are recommended.

Constrained by just one person’s experiences, the exhibition “Fragments” is an “In-hibition” - unique and random fractions of a second, stolen from the time-space continuum and briefly frozen - each as a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity.

Image Art Exposed Group - Theme: Landscape: 16X9

The next IA Group meeting will be on Wednesday 27 September. The theme for September is a little different: Landscape 16x9.


The vast majority of pictures tend to stick to two formats: 10x8 or 6X4. Why? Maybe because 10X8 inches has always been one of the most popular paper sizes for prints and 6X4 is the format for 35mm film. Let’s try something different. 16X9 - the format for movies.


Does it have to be a landscape? Absolutely not. Cityscape, nightscape, fashion portrait, street, travel, whatever genre you like. It can be a brand-new picture you have shot this month or something from your archive. Any picture at all. It just has to be 16X9.


Now this could be a tricky project. Tricky, but lots of opportunities! Composition (Rule of thirds? Golden ratio? Negative space?), closeup, full-height, portrait?


Whether you are sharing pictures or not, come along to the group on Wednesday 27 September. It’s a great opportunity to meet up with lots of members. See old friends, make new friends. Chat about photography, share information and tips and just generally have a good evening. Oh, and there will always be good photographs to look at.
