Introduction To Analogue

Introduction to Analogue is an introductory workshop aimed at anyone wanting to learn the end to end process of black and white photography. Discover the art of black and white photography in our darkrooms with a complete darkroom workshop from processing film to printing your own black and white photographs.

This fully comprehensive workshop, teaches you the basics of film photography, darkroom processing and printing. 
By the end of this course you will become confident in processing and printing your own black and white film.

Suitable for anyone with no prior darkroom experience or those looking for a full refresher. 

Morning 11am - 1pm

Film Processing of 35mm Film 
Learn how to process 35mm black and white film by hand in The Camera Club darkrooms. We will cover processing equipment, chemical dilutions and best preparations for film handling and archiving negatives. 

Lunch - 1pm - 2pm

Afternoon 2pm - 6pm

Contact Printing + Darkroom Printing
Gain experience with darkroom procedures from how to set up your enlarger and making a contact print using traditional analogue methods with 8x10 resin coated paper. All paper and chemicals will be provided.

Preparing and focusing a selected black and white negative for a final enlargement print. Exploring some basic dodging and burning techniques for making a series of final prints.


If you don't have a 35mm SLR camera we have a Canon EOS 300 available for use during the course - please notify our darkroom manager at darkroom@thecameraclub.co.uk 

If you are signing up for the Introduction to Analogue please can you bring along an exposed roll of 35mm black and white film which you have taken in your 35mm SLR film camera. 

Suitable black and white films for the Introduction to Analogue;

Ilford HP5 400ASA (Medium speed black and white film)
Ilford FP4 125ASA (Slow speed black and white film)

Darkroom Accreditation 

Please Note: All members who want to to use the darkrooms will have to complete an accreditation before being able to book the darkrooms. These accreditations are open to non-members provided you sign up for membership before your accreditation booking.

    • Offers member full accreditation to the darkrooms
    • Explaining the darkroom process from processing to printing
    • Includes a breakdown of all darkroom equipment, paper and chemistry and the rules of using the darkrooms.


More information about chemicals supplied at the club for your booking can be found here or in the information sheets below.


Workshops are subject to minimum enrolment. Please register early, within five days of the workshop date, to reduce the likelihood of the workshop becoming fully booked.

Introduction to Analogue 1 (Beginner)

A comprehensive workshop to beginners who are completely new to the darkroom. 


We offer a collection of workshops that provides you with the basics of processing and printing black and white darkroom techniques. 


All workshops will take place in our darkrooms and will cover practical black and white film processing, contact printing and printing from a black and white negative.

Introduction to Analogue 2 (Intermediate)

A perfect follow up workshop for members who have already completed an introductory printing course and are experience with black and white printing. 


Please bring black and white negatives (35mm or medium format) which shows a variety of subject matter, tonal range and environment. 


Please note: This workshop only covers the printing process and members should come well prepared with processed black and white negatives. 

All other materials (including chemicals and paper) will be provided.

Who Should Attend?
This comprehensive workshop is ideal for anyone wanting to get up to speed quickly and prepare themselves for using the darkrooms independently. 

You'll be given a full accreditation and there will be information printouts to take away from each accreditation and workshop.

Please Note:  Non-member are welcome to sign up for the darkroom accreditation as long as you have signed up for membership beforehand.
