Exhibitions

A great feature of the Camera Club is that it has its own attractive ground-floor gallery Gallery 1885 with high-quality exhibition lighting and hanging space for around 40 exhibition prints. Monthly exhibitions feature outstanding work by one or more members, plus ‘outside’ exhibitions of national standing, as well as members' open exhibitions and competitions.

Gallery 1885 is open to the public – you do not have to be a Club Member to enjoy our exhibitions.

To see our upcoming exhibitions please visit our blog or wait for announcements on the homepage.

Reimagining Non-Places

Christopher Sparkes
19 August - 06 September 2024

Open View : 22 August 7pm

"Reimagining Non-Places is a body of work still in growth, considering the thematic reflections in anthropology that consider the impact of urban spaces and interiors on the people that occupy them. Coined by French anthropologist Marc Auge in the 1990's, the term 'non-places' refers to generic building interiors and their exterior enclosers that do not confer a feeling of place. We typically refer to these places as soulless."

"All towns and cities contain non-places, and the notion these anthropological places force an insidious anonymity and an imposed impersonality on those that pass through them is a central concern of this work. Herein, this exhibition calls attention to how we might interact with non-places, and whether these interactions impact significantly on how we relate to our urban landscapes."

Christopher Sparkes is a photographer based in London, and started photographing when he was a teenager. Christopher also has a career as a clinical scientist in cardiothoracic surgery and finds the stark differences between this and his photography career as curiously harmonising.
